New Year Update
The new year is here and several things have happened.
Turtle Nesting
The leatherback turtle nesting season is about to start again! Last year was a very successful one for our endangered friends that came nesting to Bahia’s beach. Around 1,500 turtles hatched and safely made it to the ocean to start an amazing life journey that hopefully will bring them back to our beach in about 25 years. We will have lots of opportunities to witness this wonder of nature and participate in their conservation.
Aerating our lakes
As part of our integrated lake management program, over the last several weeks we have been working to aerate the main lake near the Boathouse and by Hole # 2. The Vertex aeration system we are implementing consists of self-cleaning flexible membrane diffusers that produce millions of micron-sized bubbles that create a slow moving current of the water column that aerates through surface contact. The idea is to increase dissolved oxygen levels and circulate the water column with a convection-like current. Initially the water changes in color, but once nutrient balance is achieved, the water becomes much clearer and weeds and algae growth is reduced. The aeration naturally results in creating a balanced and healthy aquatic ecosystem.
