The Ultimate San Juan Shopping Guide

July 28, 2016

San Juan is known for its incredible culture and dining options, but it’s also renowned for its high-end, luxurious, and authentic shopping experiences. Here is our ultimate guide to the shopping destinations you don’t want to miss out on during your stay at Bahia Beach.

The Mall of San Juan

A new addition to shopping in San Juan, The Mall of San Juan opened in March of 2015 and is home to several upscale retailers that will excite your wallets. The mall is the first time the luxury retailers Nordstrom and Saks Fifth Avenue have entered Puerto Rico, and they serve as the mall’s anchor stores. Amongst the hundreds of storefronts, you will find gorgeous designs from Versace, Jimmy Choo, Louis Vuitton, and Hervé Léger.

Ashford Avenue

While shopping in San Juan, you will want to make sure not to miss Ashford Avenue—San Juan’s version of 5th Avenue. At Ashford’s most fashionable address (1054 Ashford Avenue), you will find some of the most elite boutiques in San Juan, including Louis Vuitton, Ferragamo, Cartier, Gucci, and Mont Blanc. When you travel a little further, you will come across the ultra-sophisticated menswear styles at Monsieur, and exclusive women’s clothing and beachwear from the likes of Diane von Furstenberg and Karina Grimaldi. The Nono Maldonado store, at 1112 Ashford Avenue, is also worth visiting, as it highlights the talent of one of the most celebrated fashion designers in Puerto Rico.

Old San Juan

For a truly authentic San Juan shopping experience, Old San Juan is a must see. Its seven blocks of narrow cobblestone streets offer an array of lavish shops from beloved names like Coach, Guess, Burberry, and Ralph Lauren. Additionally, you will find several boutiques offering one-of-a-kind items handmade by Puerto Rican artisans:

  • Authentic Artwork – For locally created acrylic and oil paintings, handmade jewelry, and ceramics, the Puerto Rican Arts & Crafts store is the place to peruse. It is also home to intricate hand-carved wood, gold, and stone figurines of patron saints, known in the Puerto Rican culture as santos.
  • Hand-rolled Cigars – A key part of Puerto Rican culture is our hand-rolled cigars, and Old San Juan offers them in abundance. There are various street vendors throughout the town with their own stogies, but for a large selection in one location, The Cigar House is the place where premium cigars—including ones aged in rum—can be found.
  • Handmade Lace – Another sought-after item while shopping in Puerto Rico is high-quality handmade lace, referred to as mundillo. People use the artistic lace for everything from shower curtains to tablecloths to wedding dresses. For a prime selection, visit the Linen House.
